What does city/county management mean to you?
Professional management is the opportunity to serve the residents of the community and enhance the lives of the entire community including citizens, businesses, educational institutions and industry. City management means positive improvement with the goal of making a better quality of life for everyone.
What does a successful improvement or project look like?
Any successful program or project should be measured by the level of community engagement and how the project aims to impact the priorities of the people in the community whether through enrichment, play or economic improvements.
We should ask ourselves:
- what’s the level of benefit?
- What’s the cost effectiveness of the program/project both in the near and long term?
- Does the program/project meet the strategic direction of the community?
What is one improvement (operational, policy or physical) that you are most proud of in your current city/county?
One project I am extremely proud of is the 1st Phase of the bike/walking trail that runs through Lindsborg. Our trail opened in 2005. The project took an incredible amount of work to go from start to finish. Navigating the right-of-way process with the railroad was a huge success that took many hours and many meeting to achieve. Now, seeing people use the trail daily is so rewarding. The trail gets so much that after we clear snow from the streets, we move on to the trail.
If you could share one piece of career related wisdom to a colleague, what would it be?
Build relationships. This is so important whether you are old or young. You never know what talent, knowledge or skills someone might have that can benefit you. Whether it is people in your community, in KACM or at a federal level…creating these relationships can create so many opportunities. Those opportunities might help you or they may help the community you serve in the long term.
